The unit is designed to support both reading and writing development through engaging and scaffolded activities.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS

LEARNING GOALS

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

This unit was developed using a backward design approach, beginning with the final task of creating and presenting a story. Lessons are intentionally scaffolded to build foundational skills in sentence structure, sequencing, and narrative development. Instruction progresses from guided practice to independent application.

LESSON PLAN SAMPLE

Grade 2 – Language
Lesson: Creating a Story
Minds On

Students discuss familiar stories and identify key elements such as characters and setting.

Action

Students plan and create their own stories using graphic organizers, writing, drawing, or oral storytelling.

Consolidation

Students share their work and reflect on what they learned about storytelling.

INCLUSION and DIFFERENTIATION

This unit incorporates Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles by offering multiple ways for students to engage, learn, and demonstrate understanding. Differentiation is applied through flexible supports such as visual aids, sentence starters, and alternative response formats, including drawing and oral storytelling.

ASSESSMENT

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

Digital tools support creativity and accessibility, allowing students to present their stories in multimedia formats when appropriate. Technology is used intentionally to enhance learning rather than replace core literacy skills.

REFLECTION

This unit reflects my ability to design structured, inclusive, and meaningful learning experiences aligned with curriculum expectations. It demonstrates my understanding of backward design, UDL, and differentiated instruction while supporting diverse learners in developing confidence and literacy skills.
